TVA Paradise Fossil Plant Mine Stabilization

Project Location: Central City, Kentucky
Owner: Tennessee Valley Authority
Anticipated Completion: 2017

TVA was constructing a landfill for CCR (coal combustion residuals) over an area with abandon mine workings that could potentially collapse under the weight of the landfill.  AECOM and TerraFirm were tasked with completing a demonstration section to fill the abandon mine by placing stabilized CCR excavated from a previous landfill at the lowest possible cost.  Work required preparing grout trial mixes, mobilizing a mixing plant, drilling and setting injection pipes into the mine workings, mixing and placing grout, and confirmation drilling.  The project required installation of 5,000 lineal feet of drilling and 6,700 cubic yards of barrier and infill grout.
